AFD Responds to Multiplex Residential Structure Fire with Entrapment

At 10:30 A.M., AFD Dispatch received a 911 call reporting smoke coming from a unit of an 8-unit multiplex residential structure on the 3000 block of East 4th Avenue. The first AFD fire company arrived on location three minutes later and was told by first arriving APD officers the occupants were still inside the unit of fire origin and they were unable to reach them due to heavy smoke conditions. Due to the high life safety concerns first arriving crews requested a Second Alarm Fire response. A total of nineteen fire apparatus, command, support and additional ambulances responded to the location.
AFD crews made entry into the unit of fire origin and rescued the trapped occupants. Three persons were transported by AFD EMS ambulances to local hospitals for further medical evaluation. The fire was extinguished and contained to the unit of origin. A People Mover bus was requested to location for warm sheltering of other unit occupants as utilities had been shut off during the fire operations. The Red Cross was requested to help assist with any displaced occupants. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
