Vehicle Collision at Bancroft Avenue and Oakes Boulevard.

On Tuesday, 2/2/21, around 6:40 pm, San Leandro Police received a 911 call of a burglary that occurred in the 500 block of Callan Avenue. The caller stated the suspect had fled in a brown SUV.

Arriving officers located a speeding vehicle, matching the suspect’s vehicle description. However, the vehicle was driving at a very high velocity in a residential area, and officers briefly lost sight of the SUV.

A short time later, officers located the same SUV involved in a collision at Bancroft Avenue and Oakes Boulevard. The SUV collided with another motorist and then flipped several times before coming to rest in the 600 block of Oakes Boulevard. Officers also located a Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun, which was located outside the SUV.

The SUV had collided with a total of three other vehicles, one of which was occupied. The occupants of that vehicle were uninjured, and the sole occupant of the brown SUV was transported to a trauma hospital. This accident resulted in a reported power outage in the area.

It was later determined that the brown SUV was not related to the initial burglary investigation. It is unclear why the SUV was traveling at such speeds.

The suspect,  Bryant Abernathy, a 23-year-old male from Hayward, was arrested for firearms and vehicle code related offenses.
