Caution Urged as Cold Weather Arrives
What is being called a polar vortex is scheduled to threaten most of New Mexico with cold temperatures and the possibility of moisture beginning Sunday, Feb. 14.
The combination of cold weather and moisture could result in difficult driving conditions and potentially icy roadways throughout much of the state.
The Las Cruces Police Department encourages motorists to follow these and other safety tips:
• Motorists should slow down. Allow for more travel time when driving in wet weather.
• Be aware that – as temperatures drop – roads could become ice-covered, slick and potentially unpassable.
• When coming to a stop, motorists should apply gentle brake, avoid slamming on brakes.
• Drivers should allow for greater distance between vehicles. Normal driving conditions recommend travelling at least two seconds behind vehicles. During wet weather it is recommended to increase that distance.
• Give larger vehicles, like trucks and buses, more room for stops and turns.
• Avoid making sudden turns or lane changes.
• Drive around puddles as sitting water may be deeper than what it appears.
• Never attempt to drive through flooded arroyos or running water. Even when driving a large vehicle, like a truck or SUV, fast-moving water can easily overcome it.
• Drive with headlights on for safety and stay alert to changing weather conditions.
• Keep windshield and windows clear of snow and frost. Carry an ice-scraper and shovel should they be needed.
• If travel is not necessary, consider staying home during heavy snow or rainstorms.
• If you must travel, be prepared for slower traffic and longer drive times.
• If needed, particularly at higher elevations, use tire chains when travel is necessary on snow-covered or icy roads.
• Dress accordingly and carry items that might be needed should weather conditions worsen, such as: winter jackets, blankets, drinking water, cell phone and charging cable.
• If snow or rain is too heavy to clearly see the road, pull over to a safe distance.
• If involved in a crash during a snowstorm, or on an icy roadway, call 911 immediately and remain in your vehicle as that tends to provide safety and warmth. Some exceptions apply: if fire or gasoline fumes exist, exit the vehicle and seek safety away from traffic.
