In the midst of a historic winter weather event marked by the first-time issuance of Energy Emergency Alerts (EEA) by the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC) issued an order on February 16, 2021 directing utilities to prioritize the delivery of natural gas and electricity services necessary for life, health and public safety.

Red River Valley has continually kept residential and public health and safety a top priority throughout this extreme winter weather and urges members to continue conserving energy. While the SPP has not yet indicated rolling blackouts to resume, Red River Valley will make every effort to relay information to our membership as it comes available.
Should the SPP issue an EEA Level 3, a plan of action is in place for WFEC to shed Red River Valley’s load starting with dedicated commercial circuits first, leaving residential accounts as a very last resort.

These service interruptions (rolling blackouts) are emergency actions mandated by the SPP in order to manage the 14 state system load and avoid unnecessary prolonged outages. It is urgent we all do our part to help conserve energy to minimize future interruptions.

Per OCC’s direction, consumers in the residential and business sectors should reduce thermostats settings and unplug all non-essential electronic devices; turn off all office and workplace lighting, including exterior illumination, when not necessary for protection of life and safety; turn off all exterior lighting not used for active public safety, which includes lighting to unused parking, exterior beautification, outdoor advertising not of a safety nature, etc., among other applicable measures businesses and for residences.
