Advisory: COMMUNITY SAFETY NOTIFICATION - Coyote Encounter in Moraga 2/16/21.
Advisory: COMMUNITY SAFETY NOTIFICATION - Coyote Encounter.
This is a Community Safety Notification due to a reported coyote encounter and bite that occurred today near the intersection of Calle la Montana and Campolindo Drive. On February 16th At about 8:30 a.m., a parent was walking with her child when a coyote attacked and bit the child without warning. The parent was able to get the coyote to disengage and run away. Moraga Police, Moraga-Orinda Fire and Contra Costa County Animal Services units responded to the area and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife was also notified. The coyote was last seen running north on Calle la Montana. It has been confirmed that this coyote is the one responsible for previous attacks in the Lamorinda area.
Please remember that coyotes are wild animals and their behavior is unpredictable. Be aware of your surroundings when outdoors and, if you are followed by a coyote, make loud noises. If this fails, throw rocks in the animal's direction. Do not leave small children or pets unattended outside. Special care should be taken at dusk and dawn when coyotes are known to be more active.
Please see the attached brochure on coyote safety, including tips on how to reduce the potential for coyote conflicts. More information can also be found at www.keepmewild.org.
