Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports on 02/20/2021 at approximately 2216 hours his office was called to investigate a fatal snowmobile crash. The crash occurred on a snowmobile trail near the intersection of Indian Lake Rd and Topash St, Silver Creek Township, Cass County, Michigan.

Investigation shows that three snowmobiles were involved. 21 year old, Coloma resident, Robert Schroeder and 38 year old, Covert resident, Andrew Mayer were traveling westbound on the snowmobile trail. 45 year old, Elkhart, IN resident, Keith Webster was traveling eastbound. Both groups were approaching a hill and collided. Schroeder was transported to South Bend Memorial via Medflight. Mayer was transported to Lakeland St. Joseph Hospital via ambulance. Webster succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs are a factor. Helmets were worn and speed is believed to be a factor.

Assisting agencies include Medflight, Pridecare Ambulance, Sister Lakes Fire Department, Indian Lake Fire Department, Dowagiac Police Department and Tribal Police Department

This case remains under investigation.
