Crash Injures Woman and Young Daughter

Las Cruces police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that critically injured the driver and left her young daughter hospitalized early Monday morning.

About 12:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, Las Cruces police were dispatched to a home on the 4600 block of Helia Avenue. Police found a black 2011 Infinity that crashed through a rock wall and came to a rest in the backyard of the home.

The 31-year-old driver of the vehicle and her 11-year-old daughter both had to be extricated from the vehicle. The driver suffered multiple injuries and was unconscious when she was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center. She was later airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso with injuries that may be life-threatening.

The woman’s 11-year-old daughter suffered a fractured leg and was transported to Mountainview.

Traffic investigators believe the Infinity was traveling south on Sonoma Ranch Boulevard when it crossed into the northbound lanes, left the roadway and through several vacant lots before it crashed through a rock wall. The vehicle came to a rest in the backyard of a residence. Rocks from the rock wall caused relatively minor damage to the home.

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates excessive speed may be a contributing factor in the crash.

The names of the victims will not be released at this time. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
