Officer Involved Shooting Investigation
Ontario Police continue to investigate a pursuit that led to an Officer Involved Shooting which occurred last night.
The incident began on February 22nd at 11:55 PM, when an Ontario Police Officer attempted to stop a driver for a vehicle code violation near San Antonio Avenue and Fourth Street, in the City of Ontario. The driver failed to stop and led officers on a short pursuit. The pursuit ended on Beverly Court just north of Sixth Street when the driver used his vehicle to ram three Ontario Police vehicles. At that time, an officer involved shooting occurred in which one Ontario Police Officer fired his handgun, striking the driver.
The driver, a 29-year-old male from Ontario, was treated on scene by Ontario Fire Department Paramedics and pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity is being withheld until the San Bernardino County Coroner completes notifications.
A female passenger was in the vehicle at the time of the pursuit and was not injured in the incident. She was arrested for an unrelated warrant. She is 31 years-old from the City of Ontario. She is a family friend of the driver.
Investigators continue to look into what may have led the driver to flee in such a dangerous manner. As outlined by our policy, the shooting is being investigated by the Ontario Police Department in coordination with the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office as a parallel investigation.
The Officer who fired his weapon is an 11-year veteran of the Ontario Police Department who holds the rank of Corporal. He has been placed on three days paid administrative leave, which is standard Department practice. Two officers are being treated for minor injuries.
