Dispute Turns into Shooting Along Railroad Tracks

At about 11:15am on 2/24/21 Fairfield Police Dispatch began receiving calls about a possible shooting along the railroad tracks to the rear of the 300 block of State Street in Fairfield. Officers responded to the scene which was difficult to access as it was within the fenced in railroad right of way.

Once officers located the scene at a homeless encampment, they found one shooting victim with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Officers rendered aid until medical professionals took over and transported the victim to an area hospital. The victim is a 23 year old male from Fairfield and is currently in surgery with life threatening injuries.

The initial investigation is showing that some type of dispute occurred which escalated into a shooting, where both parties had firearms. The other party in the shooting fled the scene and is outstanding.

Please avoid the area as the scene is blocked off.  Railroad traffic had been stopped for approximately 2 hours, but is now open. If you have not been contacted by the police and have information about what happened, please contact our Investigations Bureau at (707) 428-7600. When we have more information we’ll update the public at that time.
