Carjacking from February 23, 2021: ECPD Case #2021-00000340

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Date of Release: February 25, 2021 @ 1100 hrs.
Incident Update: On Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at approximately 1536 hours, El Cerrito and Richmond Officers were advised by the California Highway Patrol that the vehicle stolen in this crime had just been involved in a hit-and-run collision on I-80 near the Macdonald Ave. off ramp. The vehicle fled the scene of the accident and was last seen exiting the freeway at Macdonald Ave.

Officers from both the El Cerrito and Richmond Police Departments conducted an area check in an attempt to locate the vehicle. At approximately 1558 hrs. a Richmond Officer located the vehicle, occupied by 5 people, driving in the area of Carlson Blvd. and Central Ave. Richmond and El Cerrito officers responded to the area and attempted to stop the vehicle, which immediately fled. A pursuit of the vehicle ensued, going through the cities of El Cerrito, Richmond, Albany and on I-80.

The vehicle was subsequently involved in a solo vehicle collision while exiting I-80 at Ashby Ave. When the vehicle came to rest, all five occupants exited and fled. All five occupants were quickly taken into custody by Richmond and El Cerrito officers. No injuries were suffered by any of the occupants of the suspect vehicle.

The names of the occupants of the vehicle are being withheld, as they are all juveniles. Two of the occupants were charged with carjacking and other charges related to this crime and booked into juvenile hall. The others were identified and released to their parents.

This case will be referred to the Contra Costa County DA’s Office for review and filing of charges.
