El Cerrito Police Department Crime Blotter: February 14th - 20th, 2021

The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito. It does not include all crimes. It also does not include non-criminal events such as missing persons, traffic collisions, non-criminal deaths, non-criminal disputes, nor many other police activities that do not result in arrest.

February 14th

Petty Theft, Attempted Vehicle Theft – 300 block of Victoria Street:
At 0738 hours, an officer responded to an auto burglary and determined and unknown suspect entered the victim’s unlocked vehicle during the previous night. The suspect rummaged through the vehicle and attempted to steal the vehicle. Unsuccessful, the suspect stole a set of work keys.

Grand Theft – 3400 block Yosemite Ave:
At 1425 hours, an officer responded to the report of a man under a car. Upon arrival, the officer determined the victim saw the suspect under his vehicle on 2/13/2021 at 0900 hours. An inspection of the vehicle revealed the catalytic converter was stolen.

Battery – 800 block Liberty Street:
At 1710 hours, an officer responded to a report of a battery. The victim was battered by a known suspect but refused to prosecute.

Warrant Arrest, Possess Controlled Substance – 7000 block Cutting Blvd:
At 1740 hours, an officer responded to a suspicious vehicle and contacted a 45 year old male who was passed out with a meth pipe on his lap. The man was wanted on a Marin County misdemeanor warrant and was also found in possession of methamphetamines. He was issued a citation and released.

February 15th

Violation of Court Order – 7100 block of Eureka Ave:
At 1706 hours, an officer met with the victims at the ECPD regarding an El Cerrito man who was caught on video earlier in the day on the victims’ property, in their front yard, in violation of a restraining order. The man also threw yard debris over the back fence into the victims’ yard. This case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for review.

Shoplifting – CVS, 670 EC Plaza:
At 2120 hours, an officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 29-year-old Richmond man after he entered the business, concealed merchandise, and left without paying. The man was transported to county jail.



February 16th

Identity Theft – San Pablo Ave. / Fresno Ave.
At 0335 hours, an officer conducted a traffic enforcement stop and contacted the occupants. Both were found to be on parole and a search of the vehicle was conducted. The officer located several pieces of mail, credit cards, checks, and other persons’ identifying information. These items were collected and the case will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Petty Theft – 900 block of Lexington Ave.
At 0438 hours, an officer made contact with a victim whose mail was located in the above traffic stop. It was determined that the mail was stolen from his unlocked vehicle.

Annoying or Harassing Phone Calls – 500 block of Liberty St:
At 0713 hours, an officer contacted the victim and learned she received a threatening text message from an unknown suspect.

Petty Theft – 6400 block of Central Ave:
At 0847 hours, an officer responded to an auto burglary. An unknown suspect entered the victim’s unlocked vehicle sometime over the previous two days and stole personal property.

Burglary – 6400 block of Portola Drive:
At 0905 hours, an officer responded to a vehicle burglary and determined the suspect entered the locked parking garage on 2/15/2021 at 2340 hours. The suspect entered an unlocked vehicle and stole personal property.

Burglary – 6400 block of Portola Drive:
At 1002 hours, while on the above reference call, the officer was flagged down regarding the theft of a bicycle on 2/11/2021. The suspect entered the bicycle storage room and stole a mountain bike.

Weapon Brandishing – 2200 block of Key Blvd:
At 1010 hours, the victim arrived home and was approached by an unknown suspect who was swinging a baseball bat. The suspect threatened to beat the victim because she refused to allow him access to the courtyard of the apartment complex.

Domestic Violence Restraining Order Violation – 11200 block of San Pablo Ave:
At 1257 hours, an officer responded to a restraining order violation. The suspect went to his child’s mother’s place of employment in violation of a Domestic Violence restraining order.

Assault with a Deadly Weapon – San Pablo Ave / Carlson Blvd:
At 1544 hours, an officer responded and determined the victim was struck in the back of the head with a stick causing a laceration to the back of his head by an unknown suspect. The victim was transported to Kaiser.

Grand Theft from Person – San Pablo Ave. / Cutting Blvd.
At 1630 hours, an unknown suspect pulled the victim’s purse off her shoulder. The victim followed the suspect from the scene and convinced him to return her purse. The suspect returned the victim’s purse but not her wallet.

February 17th

Stolen Vehicle – 6400 block Portola Drive:
At 0623 hours, an officer contacted the victim and determined and unknown suspect also stole the victim’s Hyundai Tucson during the previous night.

Battery – Big 5, 11060 San Pablo Ave:
At 1308 hours, an officer responded to Big 5 and determined at 1215 hours, the suspect entered the store and was told to leave due to an attempted theft. The suspect lowered his mask and spit in the victim's face. The suspect then left the store. The suspect was later identified and placed under citizen’s arrest by the victim and issued a citation.

Attempted Burglary – 1200 block of Cabrillo St.
Between 1300 and 1400 hours, an unknown suspect cut the screen door of the victim’s sliding glass door but did not enter the residence.

February 18th

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – 11545 San Pablo Ave.
At 0127 hours, an officer located a 1994 Ford Ranger that had been reported stolen to SFPD on 2/9/21.

Vandalism – 594 PC – Honda, 11755 San Pablo Ave:
At 0628 hours, an officer responded to the Honda dealership and determined an unknown suspect broke the windows of two vehicles during the night.

Auto Burglary – Mira Vista Hotel, 6009 Potrero Ave:
At 0858 hours, an officer was dispatched to a phone report and determined the victim’s vehicle’s window was broken and miscellaneous tools and clothing items were stolen sometime the previous night.

Shoplifting – Walgreens, 11565 San Pablo Ave:
At 0924 hours, an officer responded to a theft and determined three suspects entered the store, went to the dental health section, and filled their backpacks with dental health products and then filled their backpacks with batteries in the front of the store. They left without paying.

Petty Theft – 6400 block Portola Dr:
At 1118 hours, an officer responded to the apartment complex for a theft. An unknown suspect entered the bicycle storage room and stole a mountain bike sometime over the previous week.

Petty Theft – Recycling Center, 7501 Schmidt Lane:
At 1118 hours, an officer responded to the Recycling Center and met with an employee who told him an unknown male stole unknown electronic waste from the dumpster on 2/14/2021 at approximately 1325-1330 hours.

Shoplifting – Walgreens, 11565 San Pablo Ave:
At 1206 hours, an officer responded to Walgreens regarding a theft and determined two suspects with backpacks went to skin care, filled their backpacks with a variety of skin care products, and fled without paying.

Grand Theft – 5500 block Ludwig Ave:
At 1118 hours, an officer responded to a residence and determined an unknown suspect stole the catalytic converter from a Toyota Prius sometime over the previous two days.

Shoplifting – Walgreen’s, 11565 San Pablo Ave.
At 2012 hours, an officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 29-year-old Richmond man after he entered the store, concealed merchandise, and left without paying. Following the arrest, the man was cited and released.

February 19th

Robbery – CVS, 10650 San Pablo Ave:
At 1445 hours, officers responded to an in progress robbery. The suspect entered the store, presented a demand note to the manager, stole cash, and then fled the store.

February 20th

Grand Theft, Possession of Stolen Property, Conspiracy – 7600 block of Stockton Ave.
At 0404 hours, officers were dispatched to the location after a witness observed suspects cutting a catalytic converter from under a vehicle. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene. An officer located a vehicle matching the description in the 800 block of Ashbury Ave. and conducted a traffic stop. Upon contacting the three occupants, the officer observed a floor jack, sawzall, and drill driver. The subjects were removed from the vehicle and a search of the vehicle revealed a freshly cut catalytic converter in the trunk. Officers arrested a 23-year-old Oakland man, a 33-year-old Hayward man, and a 20-year-old Oakland man. The men were booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported to county jail.

Stolen Vehicle – Central Ave / Carlson Blvd:
At 0850 hours, an officer saw a man riding a Honda Moped eastbound on Central Ave and not wearing a wearing a helmet. A traffic stop was initiated and it was determined the moped was reported stolen to Berkeley PD on 2/12/2021. The suspect was arrested, booked, and transported to MDF.

Forgery – Bank of the West, 11100 San Pablo Ave:
At 1056 hours, an officer responded to forgery in progress and detained a man who attempted to pass checks which were stolen during a burglary in Richmond.

Robbery – 6743 Cutting Blvd:
At 1500 hours, officers responded to a home invasion robbery. The victim was approached in her front yard by a female suspect. The female was soon joined by four other suspects, armed with handguns. One of the suspects assaulted the victim while the others rifled through the house and stole property.
