Moraga-Orinda Fire conducting a controlled burn in the Canyon area today and Wednesday.
Firefighters from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District, the East Bay Municipal Utility District and CAL Fire will be conducting a small prescribed fire project along Pinehurst Road near the Canyon Y on Tuesday, & Wednesday, March 2 & 3, 2021. This project is a continuation of the work that has been done on the Pinehurst Canyon Shaded Fuel Break.
The +/- six-acre project consists of burning piled material and a small amount of understory along the old railroad right of way (“the Tracks”). The work will begin at approximately 10:00 AM and should be concluded no later than 5:00 PM. The burning will reduce fuel loading in the area and encourage new growth and native plants.
Safety is the number one priority. The project is being set up to take advantage of existing control lines and will be executed according to a strict “go, no go” checklist. We are working with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to ensure the size and timing of the burning will minimize smoke impacts to homes and other smoke-sensitive sites in the area.
If burning conditions change, the project will be rescheduled. Residents in the community of Canyon and those driving in the area may see or smell smoke. Closing exterior doors and windows during the day will help to keep smoke from entering homes. Signs cautioning motorists and bicycles about the additional fire equipment traffic and potential for reduced visibility along adjacent roadways will be posted along Pinehurst and Canyon Roads.
Questions or concerns can be directed to the Moraga-Orinda Fire District at 925-258-4599. Thank you for your support and cooperation as your first responders work to keep Moraga a safe community.
