Today, March 4, 2021 at 1 PM, the Santa Rosa Fire Department (SRFD) and Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) will be conducting a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system drill/test with pre-selected community members in the area of east Santa Rosa (Oakmont) and Kenwood. WEAs are urgent alerts sent as text-like messages to compatible mobile phones based on their location. Essentially, you should only receive the notification if you are in the area of the emergency and based on your proximity to cell towers. WEA is one of the warning and alert systems that we’ve used in the past to notify of evacuation warnings and orders.
The purpose of the test is to identify and map cell phone tower coverage gaps in the WEA system. Unlike real-time WEA messages, the test WEA messages are an opt-in choice within a smart phone’s setting. We do not expect many members of the public, other than our volunteer testers, to receive the test alert. In the event you receive the alert, it will use the word ‘TEST’.
Prior to the test, SRFD and DEM recruited residents to help with the test. In addition to these volunteers, members of SRFD and DEM will be stationed in strategic locations throughout the test area (some outside of it too) to see if they receive the WEA.

Hoy, 4 de marzo del 2021 a la 1 p.m., el Departamento de Bomberos de Santa Rosa (SRFD) y el Departamento de Manejo de Emergencias (DEM) del Condado de Sonoma realizarán un simulacro / prueba del sistema de Alerta de Emergencia Inalámbrica (WEA) con miembros de la comunidad preseleccionados en la área del este de Santa Rosa (Oakmont) y Kenwood. Los WEA son alertas urgentes que se envían como mensajes de texto a teléfonos móviles compatibles según su ubicación. Básicamente, solo debe recibir la notificación si se encuentra en el área de la emergencia y en función de su proximidad a las torres de telefonía celular. WEA es uno de los sistemas de alerta y advertencia que hemos utilizado en el pasado para notificar las advertencias y órdenes de evacuación.
El propósito de la prueba es identificar y mapear las brechas de cobertura de la torre de telefonía celular en el sistema WEA. A diferencia de los mensajes WEA en tiempo real, los mensajes WEA de prueba son una opción opcional dentro de la configuración de un teléfono inteligente. Antes de la prueba, SRFD y DEM reclutaron residentes para ayudar con la prueba. Además de estos voluntarios, los miembros de SRFD y DEM estarán estacionados en lugares estratégicos a lo largo del área de prueba (algunos fuera de ella también) para ver si reciben la WEA.
