San Leandro Police Make Arrest in December Homicide

On December 14, 2020, at 4:50 pm, the San Leandro Police Department responded to a shooting in the 600 block of E 14th Street. Officers located 23-year-old Amari Mathews of Oakland suffering from gunshot wounds and provided medical aid to Mr. Mathews; unfortunately, he succumbed to his injures at a local hospital.

Approximately an hour later, detectives located 28-year-old Wayvonte Oxner about a block away from the crime scene. Detectives learned Oxner’s vehicle was parked within the crime scene, and his car keys were located where the shooting occurred. Oxner admitted to being present at the shooting but claimed to be a bystander.

Witness interviews and surveillance video revealed the victim was robbed prior to being shot by Oxner. During the investigation, detectives learned that Oxner and the victim were associated with rival gangs from Oakland.

On February 17, 2021, San Leandro Police served an arrest warrant in Carmichael and arrested Oxner. An additional person of interest was arrested on a parole violation in Sacramento. The San Leandro Police is still actively investigating this homicide to identify other persons of interest.

“SLPD Detectives worked tirelessly to deliver justice to the Mathews family. This case underscores the tragedies associated with gun violence,” said Acting Chief Luis Torres.
