Burn Lake Cleanup Nets More Than 2 Tons of Trash

Volunteers who participated in Saturday’s Burn Lake Cleanup collected 2.45 tons of trash during their four-hour endeavor.

The cleanup began at 9 a.m. and lasted until about 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 20.

Las Cruces Utilities provided two large roll-off dumpsters for the cleanup and both were filled to the brim by the end of the event. When the two roll-offs were dumped, it was determined they had contained a collective 2.45 tons of trash and rubble.

A large amount of dead vegetation remains on the dry lakebed and will be cleared at a later date.

More than 60 volunteers from Las Cruces, New Mexico State University and El Paso participated in the cleanup that was organized by several City departments. Pizza was served to volunteers following the cleanup.

The Cleanup project received assistance from Las Cruces police, Codes Enforcement, Las Cruces Public Works, Las Cruces Utilities, Keep Las Cruces Beautiful and volunteer organizations including NMSU Aggies without Limits, the NMSU Society of Human Resources, and the Roadrunner Prevention Group which helps steer youth away from drug and alcohol use. The Community of Hope, Gospel Rescue Mission, El Crucero and the Farmer’s Market are also lent their support to the cleanup effort.

The Las Cruces Police Department thanks all those who participated in the cleanup.
