Pandemic within a pandemic, as domestic violence increases during lockdown. How can you help?
After the imposition of pandemic-related lockdowns, domestic violence incidents rose in the United States by over 8%. That's because over the past year, victims around the country have had to stay at home with their potential abusers, and in some cases, unable to seek help.
It has been described as a pandemic within a pandemic.
So what is domestic violence?
Domestic violence is an act of violence or abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting. Domestic Violence is not only between a husband and wife, but any intimate relationship including: spouse or partner, heterosexual or same-sex relationships, between former spouses, partners and/or boyfriends and girlfriends.
Domestic violence may include verbal, emotional, sexual or physical abuse. Often times, one of the ways the abuser keeps their partner under their control is by isolating them from friends and family. With so many families locked down in close quarters, many victims are going unnoticed.
