Flash Flood Warning until 06:45AM Friday

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for... Habersham County in northeastern Georgia... Rabun County in northeastern Georgia...

* Until 645 AM EDT.

* At 1257 AM EDT, Doppler Radar indicates an axis of strong thunderstorms with heavy rainfall entering Rabun and Habersham counties. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing 1-2 inches of rain in a very short period of time. This rainfall will occur on top of earlier rainfall of 3 to 6 inches across the warned area and Minor flooding is already ongoing. Therefore, this new area of heavy rain will exacerbate ongoing flooding and cause new areas of flash flooding to develop, some of which will be significant. This rainfall may also result in additional dam releases along the Tallulah River, which may cause flooding immediately downstream of area dams, including Mathis Dam near Lakemont. HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding. SOURCE...Radar. IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Significant flooding of low-lying areas including farmland, campgrounds, low-water crossings, parks and greenways, residential yards, and other low-lying areas. A few structures may also be impacted, including homes and businesses, requiring evacuations.

* Some locations that may experience flash flooding include... Clayton, Clarkesville, Demorest, Mountain City, Tiger, Dillard, Sky Valley, Tallulah Falls, Lakemont, Lake Rabun, Lake Burton, Tallulah Gorge State Park, Black Rock Mountain State Park, Seed Lake, Turnerville, Hollywood, Batesville and Pine Mountain. Residents downstream of Mathis Dam including near Shady Ln and along Old US 441 near Lakemont are urged to stay weather aware tonight and be prepared to seek higher ground at any time should additional dam releases occur. This is a rapidly evolving situation.

Instructions:

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
