Flood Warning until 06:30PM
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a
* Flood Warning for... Habersham County in northeastern Georgia... Western Rabun County in northeastern Georgia...
* Until 630 PM EDT Friday.
* At 642 AM EDT, Heavy rainfall has ended across Rabun and Habersham counties and no additional rainfall is expected. Flooding concerns associated with earlier flash flooding have abated across much of the area, especially near smaller streams and tributaries. However, the Talullah and Soque River watersheds are still dealing with significant floodwaves which continue to work through both river systems. Crests on these larger streams are still several hours away and Minor to Moderate flooding will continue on scattered reaches of both rivers through early Friday afternoon. Therefore, the Flash Flood Warning has been cancelled since the flash flood threat has ended; however a Flood Warning has been issued across a smaller portion of Rabun and Habersham counties due to the continued threat for significant river flooding.
* Georgia Power has declared a high-flow event for the Tallulah River reservoir system, especially below Mathis Dam, where high flow may result in flooding along Shady Ln. It is possible additional releases may occur below Mathis Dam or at other reservoirs, and these additional releases may result in more significant flooding, including along Old US 441 near Lakemont. Residents are urged to stay weather aware and pay close attention to the latest information from Rabun County Emergency Management and Georgia Power in the event of more significant flooding. Regardless, within the warned area, continue to expect widespread flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to the Soque and Tallulah rivers, including farmland, wooded areas, parks and greenways, river-access areas, low-water crossings, and a few secondary roads.
* Minor flooding will continue along the Soque River from Batesville to Clarkesville to the Chattahoochee River. In Rabun County, Minor to potentially Moderate flooding will continue below Lake Burton to below Tugalo Dam, especially near Mathis Dam, where additional releases are possible which may exacerbate ongoing flooding and force residents to seek higher ground.
* AFFECTED AREAS: HABERSHAM, GA ... RABUN, GA
Instructions:
Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become unstable and unsafe. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.
