Alcohol & Distracted Driving Awareness Month- extra patrol on 4/10 and 4/12

Additional officers from the Hesperia Sheriff’s Department will be out on patrol 4/10/2021 looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs as part of our effort to prevent DUI’s in the city. Similarly, on 4/12/2021, there will be additional officers out looking for distracted drivers on the roads. These events are being held during Alcohol Awareness & Distracted Driving Awareness Month, which will be a focus throughout the state during the month of April.

Hesperia Sheriff’s Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Similarly, Distracted Driving can have severe consequences. Nationally, 2,839 were killed in distracted driving crashes in 2018, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is always in the best interest of you and those around you to keep eyes on the road, phones out of reach and focus fully on operating your vehicle. Even if you are stopped, law enforcement regularly cites drivers for texting or talking on handheld devices while operating a vehicle.

The Hesperia Sheriff’s Station reminds all drivers to be focused and free from impairments while on the road. Doing so will allow everyone to reach their destinations safely.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
