El Cerrito Police Department Crime Blotter: March 14th - 28th, 2021

The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito. It does not include all crimes. It also does not include non-criminal events such as missing persons, traffic collisions, non-criminal deaths, non-criminal disputes, nor many other police activities that do not result in arrest.

March 14th:

Stolen Vehicle – 1700 block of Elm St:

At 4:13 pm, an officer responded to the theft of a Ford F250. The theft occurred between 1800 hours on 3/13/21 to 1558 hours on 3/14/21.

Stolen Vehicle Recovery – Key Blvd / Humboldt Ave:

At 7:14 pm, an officer located and recovered a stolen Acura.

March 15th:

Driving Under the Influence & Vehicle Pursuit- 11450 San Pablo Avenue

At 6:35 am, officers were dispatched to Safeway to check on a female driver who was disoriented. Upon arrival, officers contacted a 34-year-old Oakland woman who was intoxicated. The woman refused to speak with officers and drove off northbound on San Pablo Avenue. A brief pursuit took place, and the woman was taken into custody near the intersections of San Pablo and Clinton Avenues. The woman was booked at the ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Attempt Burglary- 10944 San Pablo Avenue

At 12:45 am, an unknown suspect shattered the window to a pickup truck and tried to steal several tools which were locked together with a steel cable.

Warrant Arrest- Central Avenue and San Joaquin Street:

At 1:57 pm, an officer arrested a 54-year-old man for a felony arrest warrant. The man was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

March 16th:

Vehicle Theft- 800 block Lexington Avenue

An unknown suspect stole a 1994 Toyota pickup truck between the 12th and the 14th.

Shoplifting- 11565 San Pablo Avenue

At 8:59 am, two suspects entered the business and stole over $600 in deodorants.

At 8:37 am, an unknown suspect entered the business and stole several premade Easter baskets.

Grand Theft-San Pablo Ave/ San Diego St.

An officer reported the victim parked her Honda Accord at 0900 hours at the above listed location. When she returned to her vehicle around 1800 hours, she discovered her catalytic converter had been stolen.

Warrant Arrest- Eastshore Blvd./ Potrero Ave.

At 2:32 am, an officer conducted a traffic enforcement stop for a vehicle code violation and contacted the driver, a thirty-year-old male from Richmond. During a warrants check, the Officer discovered the male had two outstanding warrants. The male was taken into custody without incident and transported to the MDF.

March 17th:

Auto Burglary-3200 Block of Santa Clara Ave.

At 2318 hours, an Officer responded to the report of an unknown subject tampering with the victim’s vehicle. The suspect smashed out the window of the victim’s vehicle and rifled through the contents but did not take any property.
March 18th:

Recovered Stolen Vehicle-6009 Potrero Ave. (Hotel Mira Vista)

At 12:12 am, an officer noticed a stolen truck near Potrero Ave. and Eastshore Blvd. The vehicle parked quickly, and the occupants fled on foot. One of the subjects was detained nearby while the other two eluded capture. During an inventory of the stolen truck, several power tools, saws, and a car jack were located. These tools are commonly used by catalytic converter thieves.

Burglary- 5800 block of El Dorado Avenue
An unknown suspect broke into a van during the night of the 17th and stole several thousand dollars in tools.

Robbery- 1000 El Cerrito Plaza

At 11:20 am, a 34-year-old man was arrested by store security for stealing over two-hundred dollars in groceries. While being detained, the suspect punched the security guard in the face in an attempt get away. The man was booked at the ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

March 19th:

Residential Burglary – 900 block of Avis Dr:

At 2:58 pm, an officer reported an unknown suspect entered the victim’s residence by breaking a window. Once inside the suspect removed the victim’s wallet.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – Key Blvd near Humboldt Avenue:

At 7:14 pm an officer located a vehicle that was parked and unoccupied that had been stolen to the Oakland Police Department. The vehicle was impounded.

March 20th:

Shoplifting – 10600 block of San Pablo Ave:

At 8:12 am, an officer reports the arrest of a 59-year-old male. The male entered a business, filled a bag with merchandise, and then left without paying. The male was located, identified, and then released on a citation.

Kidnapping / Assault with a Deadly Weapon / Spousal Battery:

At 8:43 pm officers responded to the report of a stabbing occurring within a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle traveling on Potrero Avenue at Eastshore Blvd. It was determined that an altercation including a felony assault occurred in the vehicle and the suspect would not allow the victim to get out of the vehicle. The suspect was arrested and booked at ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

March 21st:

Warrant Arrest – Potrero Avenue near Eastshore Blvd:

At 4:51 am an officer saw a subject walking that they knew had several warrants for his arrest. The subject was contacted and placed under arrest. The subject was cited on two separate warrants issued by ECPD and released at the scene.

Possession of Paraphernalia, Probation Violation – 11700 block of San Pablo Ave:

At 12:48 pm, an officer reports the arrest of a 36-year-old male for being in possession of a smoking device commonly used for a controlled substance. The male was also on probation. The male was identified and released from the scene with a citation.

Shoplifting – 11565 San Pablo Avenue (Walgreen’s):

At 8:30 pm an officer went to Walgreen’s for the report that a theft had just occurred. It was reported that a subject had come inside and loaded up merchandise into a bag and walked out of the store without paying for the items.

Warrant Arrest – 11645 San Pablo Avenue (Freeway Motel):

Officers responded to the report of a disturbance at the motel and discovered the subject had two separate non citable warrants for his arrest issued by the ECPD. The subject was arrested and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

March 23rd:

Shoplifting- 2000 El Cerrito, Ross-

At 10:42 am, an officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 45 year old male for stealing clothes from the business. The man was issued a citation and released from the scene.

Vandalism – 2500 block of Tamalpais Ave

At 8:35 pm, an officer reported an unknown suspect threw a rock at a residence breaking one of the windows.

March 24th:

Prowling, Indecent Exposure, Possession of a Concealed Dagger and Probation Violation- 3400 block of Yosemite Avenue-

At 4:30 am, a woman noticed an male sitting on her couch, exposing himself for the purposes of sexual gratification. The victim woke her partner, who confronted the man who ran off. Officers located the suspect, a 34-year-old man from Richmond, nearby. The subject, who was on felony probation, was found to have a dagger concealed in his sock. The man was arrested, booked at the ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. During the investigation, detectives learned the man had prowled onto several other properties during a several hour time span.

Shoplifting- 11565 San Pablo Avenue, Walgreens

At 1:42 pm, two unidentified suspects entered the business and stole several cosmetic items.

Shoplifting-2000 El Cerrito Plaza, Ross

At 3:58 pm, an officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 46-year-old female for stealing several clothing items from the business. The woman was issued a citation and released from the scene.

Shoplifting- 2000 El Cerrito Plaza, Ross

At 4:22 pm, two unknown suspects entered the business and stole several items and left the store without paying.

Vandalism- Fairmount Avenue @ BART Path

An officer reported an unknown suspect used a marker to graffiti a bench.

At 7:25 pm, an officer reported an unknown suspect entered the business and stole several items and left the store without paying.

March 25th:

Brandishing - 11785 San Pablo Avenue:
Officers responded to the report of a man brandishing a knife at a woman during a verbal argument. Officers arrived on scene and located the suspect, a 60-year-old transient, who was in possession of a folding knife. The victim did not desire prosecution to the man was released at the scene and the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Vehicle Theft- San Pablo and Carlos Avenue:

An unknown suspect stole a Honda Civic sometime during the night of the 24th.

Vandalism- San Pablo Avenue @ Eastshore Boulevard:

An unknown suspect used a Sharpie to vandalize a US mailbox.
Burglary/Vandalism- 1300 block of Lawrence Street:
An unknown suspect shattered the windows to seven vehicles in the neighborhood. Some vehicles were just vandalized, while others were rummaged through.

Brandishing- D.D.’s Discounts, 11555 San Pablo Avenue:

At 2:48 pm, a father and his five-year-old son were walking into DD’s Discount when a 60-year-old transient male pulled out a knife and threatened them. Officers arrived on scene and took the man into custody and transported him to the Martinez Detention Facility. The man was booked for brandishing a weapon and for being a parolee-at-large.

Shoplifting – 10012 San Pablo Avenue, Pic-N-Pac:
At 7:05 pm, an officer reported an unknown suspect entered the business and selected two bottles of alcohol before exiting the store without paying.

Shoplifting – 2000 El Cerrito Plaza, Ross

At 8:23 pm, an officer reported an unknown suspect entered the business and stole several items and left the store without paying.
Possession of Controlled Substance – San Pablo Ave / Schmidt Lane
At 11:27 pm, an officer reports the arrest of a 33-year-old woman after a small quantity of controlled substance was found inside the woman’s vehicle. The woman was issued a citation and released.

March 26th:

Petty Theft / Warrant arrest – 670 El Cerrito Plaza (CVS):
At 8:12 pm an officer was dispatched to CVS for the report that someone had just stolen items and fled the store. Another officer located the suspect at the Plaza BART station and detained her. The CVS employee looked at the suspect and confirmed she was the person who stole the items. The stolen items were recovered from the suspect. The suspect was found to have an outstanding warrant for her arrest for Grand Theft issued by El Cerrito PD. She was arrested and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

March 27th:

Stolen Vehicle – 6700 block of Fairmount Ave:

At 10:19 am, an officer reports an unknown suspect stole the victim’s trailer from their parking lot sometime overnight.

Stolen Vehicle – 2900 block of Santa Clara:

At 10:01 am, an officer reports an unknown suspect stole the victim’s pick-up truck sometime overnight.

Possession of a Controlled Substance, Warrant Arrest – Kearney
Street and Wall Ave:

At 12:14 pm, an officer reports the arrests of a 45-year-old male and a 50-year-old female. The male was in possession of a controlled substance and smoking device, and the female was wanted person. Both were positively identified and then released on citations.

Theft – 7100 block of Cutting Blvd:

At 2:34 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect entered a construction site and removed an air compressor. The theft happened sometime overnight.

Vandalism – 5400 block of Barret Ave:

At 1:03 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect shattered the driver side window of a victim’s vehicle. This incident happened sometime overnight.

Petty Theft – 670 El Cerrito Plaza (CVS):

At 9:30 pm, an officer was contacted by CVS employees who reported that someone had just stolen merchandise and fled the business. The suspect was not located.

Grand Theft / probation violation – San Pablo Avenue at Madison Avenue:

At 10:57 pm an officer was patrolling when he noticed several subjects under a car removing the catalytic converter with a saw. The officer detained three suspects and other officers arrived on scene and took them into custody. All three suspects were taken back to El Cerrito PD and booked. Two of the suspects were released from ECPD and one of them, who was on probation was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

March 28th:

Brandishing – 11450 San Pablo Avenue (Safeway):
At 2:14 am, officers were dispatched to Safeway for the report that someone had just brandished a knife at an employee. Officers arrived and located the suspect outside of the store. It was determined that the subject was sleeping near the front doors of Safeway and an employee went outside and asked him to move. The suspect pulled out a pocketknife opened it up and pointed the blade at the victim employee. The suspect was found to be on parole. He was arrested and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Battery – S. 55th and Potrero Ave:
At 1:21 pm, the victim reports that a friend approached her and accused her of not paying money owed to him. The suspect then punched the victim on the head and back before fleeing the area on a bike. The victim did not sustain any injuries and declined medical attention.

Vandalism – Craft Ave and Terrace Ave:

At 2:57 pm, an officer reports a victim was approached by several subjects while in his vehicle. One of the suspects struck the victim’s vehicle with a baseball as he fled. While trying to evade the suspects, the victim was involved in a collision. The suspects continued to follow the second victim into Richmond. The second victim was able to elude the suspects.

Grand Theft – 11450 San Pablo Avenue (Safeway):

At 7:30 pm, an officer was sent to Safeway for the report that someone had just loaded up a shopping cart with over $1000.00 worth of merchandise and wheeled the cart outside without paying for the items. When confronted by an employee, the cart became stuck in the mud and the suspect fled.
