March 29: National Vietnam War Veterans Day
March 29 is National Vietnam War Veterans Day in the United States. First observed in 2012, it honors the US military members who served during the Vietnam War. Lasting from 1955 to 1975, the Vietnam War engulfed the Southeast Asian country of Vietnam as well as its neighboring countries, Cambodia and Laos. March 29 was chosen as National Vietnam War Veterans Day because on March 29, 1973, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) was disbanded and the last U.S. combat troops departed the Republic of Vietnam. To say that many veterans who returned home either didn’t receive any recognition for their service, didn’t receive the proper amount of recognition for their service, or were outright protested against is a dramatic understatement.
The Calaveras Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Vietnam Veterans for their service and say “WELCOME HOME”.
