April 2, 2021 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 & ELECTION
Friday, April 2, 2021
VACCINATIONS EXPAND – STILL MUST “MASK FOR US”

Initially, the Governor and all of us had hoped COVID-19 would cease dominating our lives by April 7 - 2020. That was to be the date the Governor’s first stay-at-home order was to end. It was extended over and over because the virus was virulent and relentless – it still is. A year has passed and a new normal exists. Masking, plexiglass barriers, social distancing, and limited gatherings remain many of the necessary daily protocols to “normal” interactions amongst us.

The encouraging news is that vaccination eligibility and availability are expanding to the greater population. All Illinoisans 16 years and older with specified underlying conditions, all phase 1C persons (food and beverage service, IT technology, retail, legal, water and wastewater, etc.), and really anyone who should be vaccinated and wants it can register and be vaccinated. A fair amount of eligible people still prefer to wait, or refuse to be vaccinated all together. We all remain in this fight nonetheless. The pandemic continues to challenge our economic, physical, and mental resources. Hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 are still at serious levels and cannot be ignored.

On February 1, Burr Ridge had a total of 933 COVID cases (651 DuPage + 282 Cook). March 1 the total was 980 (660 DuPage + 320 Cook) – 47 more infections. As of today, the count is 1,085 (742 DuPage + 343 Cook) – 105 more since March 1. A month ago, the area positivity rate was about 2.5%, daily deaths were single or low double-digits (any is too many) and there was plenty of available hospital beds. These percentages and numbers are climbing again. Positivity is hovering around 5% - double – but still relatively low. We have to keep our guard up, though. Possibly more pertinent than infection rates is the rate of hospitalizations and, of course, daily deaths. These remain low. If we can get to herd immunity – a changing metric – while driving daily hospitalizations and deaths consistently to single digits, we might be able to declare some semblance of victory – but that declaration is still not in sight.

Election Day is April 6, next Tuesday, for municipal, school board, township, park district, as well as other local offices and referenda. If you do not vote early or by mail – two excellent ways to do your duty – please vote next Tuesday. Do not let COVID-19 stop you from voting; measures are in place to ensure that you have a safe and healthy voting experience. These are important elections that can affect your lives well after we defeat the virus.

Remember, if you are a Burr Ridge resident and eligible to be vaccinated, you can access [email protected] and register with our own Burr Ridge vaccination site at Metro Infectious Disease Consultants at 901 McClintock Drive. It’s vital we all remain vigilant, positive, and dedicated to winning this fight. With that idea in mind, I leave you with a positive thought from a local hero:
