On November 2, 2016, the Safe Youth Zone was piloted at Compton and Century Stations. The Safe Youth Zone was designed to provide a temporary safe haven for at-risk and Commercially Sexually Exploited Children.

On June 9, 2020, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the expansion of the Safe Youth Zone to include ALL Sheriff’s Stations, hospitals, clinics, Fire Departments, and schools!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and statistics show that many teens that run away from home are often sexually assaulted while on the streets. 80% of runaway and homeless girls reported having been sexually or physically abused, and 48% of runaway and homeless youth who engaged in a commercial sex activity said they did it because they didn’t have a safe place to stay.

We are so happy to share that all Department Patrol Stations open to the public for 24-hour service will be designated as Safe Youth Zones.

County Safe Youth Zones will be designated by large yellow signs posted in conspicuous spaces. And while Sheriff’s Station lobbies have always been used as safe places for those who need emergent and non-emergent services, we are proud to soon display our yellow Safe Youth Zone badge where minors can seek shelter and services when needed.

Lancaster Sheriff’s Station polices the City of Lancaster, Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, and the unincorporated communities of Antelope Acres, Lake Los Angeles, and Quartz Hill in the Antelope Valley.
