Advancing Multimodal (walking, cycling, automobile) Safety Through Bicycle and Pedestrian Risk Reduction
On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, the Fairfield Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation. From the hours of 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. officers focused on a stretch of North Texas Street that has seen increased risk for pedestrians and bicycles. The operation resulted in eight citations issued, two towed vehicles, and three arrests. Officers recovered a replica firearm and approximately one ounce of suspected methamphetamine. These directed enforcements are vital in reducing the number of traffic collisions within our community while advancing multimodal safety for all.
Funds for the operation were provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). According to a 2019 Governors Highway Safety Association report, pedestrian traffic fatalities in California increased by 12% from 2018 to 2019. Fairfield Police Department in partnership with OTS funded programs promote safe behaviors and the use of roadways when walking or biking. Programs target all age groups to raise awareness about traffic rules, rights, and responsibilities whether you are driving, on foot or on bikes. Specifically, programs are designed for high-risk populations, including youth and older community members, all in an effort to teach safer driving, bicycling, and walking behaviors.
