On April 5^th, 2021, San Leandro community members called to report a shooting in the area of 390 Macarthur Bl. Bystanders reported a male and female engaged in a verbal argument during which the male was screaming at the female to get in his vehicle. The male produced a .45 cal semi-automatic firearm and discharged it at the female when she ran away from him.  The shooter, later identified as Denzel Jones, 27, of Oakland, entered his vehicle and fled from the area at a high rate of speed. The female quickly entered an awaiting vehicle and fled the area as well.
 
San Leandro Police responded and searched the area but were unable to locate Jones or the female victim.  Based on bystander video and other evidence obtained from the scene, San Leandro Police were able to identify the license plate of the vehicle Jones was driving.
 
On April 6^th, 2021, San Leandro Police Officers located the vehicle parked in the Bank of America parking lot at 1200 Fairmont Blvd. Jones was contacted by uniformed patrol officers as he sat in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. He was detained without incident and a loaded .45 cal semi-automatic pistol was found in his possession. A second 9mm pistol was also located inside the vehicle. Jones was later booked at the Santa Rita Jail.
 
The involved female was contacted at the Bank of America and officers were able to confirm she did not receive any injuries as a result of Jones shooting at her.
 
“We are thankful no one was injured during this shooting as well as for the safe arrest of an armed shooting suspect,” said San Leandro Police Sergeant Steve Cesaretti. “Anyone with further information that will aid our detectives is urged to call the San Leandro Police Department at (510) 577-2740.”
 
On April 7, 2021, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case against Jones and charged him with one count of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of a felon in possession of a firearm. Jones is currently out of custody on bail.
