Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of March 29-April 4, 2021

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 03-31-21 at approximately 3:30 a.m., several officers were dispatched to the area of Parkrose Avenue and Morton Drive on a report of a subject trying door handles to vehicles as he walked down the street. The dispatcher told the officers that the subject entered a dark colored vehicle in front of a house on the unit block of Parkrose Avenue. Officer Lajoie and Officer Abuan illuminated their flashlights into the vehicle and saw a person crouched down on the floorboard of the driver’s seat. The officers ordered the subject to exit the vehicle, and the subject did not comply with commands. A K-9 officer arrived at the scene and assisted, and the subject eventually crawled out of the driver’s seat and was instructed to lay flat on the ground. The officers asked the subject if he had anything illegal on his person, and the subject said he may have a knife. The officers found a screwdriver in the subject’s pants pocket. The subject initially gave a false name to the officers, but they were able to learn his true identity. The officers found a hammer and a crowbar on the front passenger seat of the vehicle where the subject was hiding. The owner of the vehicle came out of his house and told the officers those items did not belong to him. Officer Lajoie arrested the subject, a 25-year old Pacifica resident, for vehicle burglary, providing a false name to make another liable, vehicle tampering, possession of burglary tools, and resisting arrest. Thanks goes out to the observant reporting party!

On Wednesday, 03-31-21 at approximately 3:10 p.m., Officer Brenes was dispatched to the Walgreen’s store on San Pedro Road on a report of a male subject who had just stolen from the store. Officer Brenes contacted the subject (who was on parole for robbery) and asked him if he had anything illegal on his person, and the subject admitted to having methamphetamine and fentanyl in his pants pocket. The subject, a 26-year old San Francisco resident, returned the stolen merchandise, and Officer Brenes issued him a citation for possessing a controlled substance.

On Wednesday, 03-31-21 at approximately 7:57 p.m., Sergeant Mattos, Officer Fulmore, and Officer Poti were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person in the parking garage of an apartment building on the 400 block of A Street. Sergeant Mattos arrived on the scene and met with the reporting party/victim who pointed at the suspect as he was attempting to leave the parking lot in his white Nissan Murano. Officer Fulmore was able to stop the vehicle and detain the suspect. The 21-year old victim said at 7:30 p.m., she drove her boyfriend to work and returned minutes later into the secured parking garage. She said she noticed a vehicle follow her into the garage and park next to her. The victim said the driver was “awkwardly staring” at her. The victim said she gathered her things and was walking towards the elevator. The victim said she noticed the subject was following her, and she walked quickly to get into the elevator. The victim said the suspect started sprinting towards the elevator, but she got there before he was able to enter. Once in her apartment, the victim phoned her boyfriend to tell him what had happened. The victim said she was able to go back into the garage to pick up her boyfriend without the subject noticing her. When they returned to the parking garage, the victim’s 21-year old boyfriend approached the suspect in his vehicle, and he saw that the suspect was masturbating. The boyfriend told the suspect to leave, or he would call the police. The boyfriend wanted the subject arrested, as he feared his girlfriend would had been assaulted if she wasn’t able to flee from him in the elevator. Officer Poti arrested the suspect, a 34-year old Rocklin resident, for indecent exposure, possession of a controlled substance and possession of unlawful paraphernalia.

On Wednesday, 03-31-21 at 11:01 p.m., Officer Covarrubias conducted a pedestrian stop of a subject in the area of Callan Boulevard and Serramonte Boulevard. The officer knew the subject was on parole when he announced himself to the subject. The subject then attempted to hide and walk away from the officer and became argumentative. The subject, the same subject mentioned in the case on Parkrose Avenue and Morton Drive earlier in the morning, was once again booked in jail—this time for a parole violation and resisting/delaying and obstructing a police officer.

On Saturday, 04-03-21 at approximately 1:47 a.m., Officer Greene was on patrol in the area of Junipero Serra Boulevard and Serramonte Boulevard when he saw a subject who was traveling at a high rate of speed, causing the tires to screech. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, and he subsequently arrested the driver, a 27-year old San Francisco resident, for driving under the influence. In addition, the subject had cocaine and cash in the center console of the vehicle, and he was also charged with possession of narcotics for sale and transporting/selling narcotics.

On Saturday, 04-03-21 at approximately 8:40 p.m., Officer Premenko was dispatched to the Emergency Room at Seton Medical Center on a report of a patient who had illegal drugs in his possession. The paramedic said he was transporting the subject, a 26-year old Redwood City resident, who admitted to using fentanyl and wanted to go to the hospital. The paramedic found two baggies in the subject’s jacket pocket. The subject admitted that the baggies contained fentanyl and said he purchased them in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco. Officer Premenko issued the subject a citation for possession of a controlled substance.

On Saturday, 04-03-21 at approximately 9:26 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of South Mayfair Avenue on a report of a hit and run of four parked vehicles. One of the victims saw the suspect vehicle and was familiar with the owner and where he resided. Officer Premenko and Officer Zhang contacted the subject at his residence on the 1100 block of South Mayfair Avenue, and they subsequently cited the 54-year old subject for driving under the influence and hit and run.

On Sunday, 04-04-21 at approximately 3:20 p.m., Officer N. Martin and Officer Chittenden were dispatched to a call of a subject driving a Toyota Sienna driving erratically, failing to stay in the lane, and not moving at green lights. Three minutes later, Officer R. McCarthy advised there was a head-on vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Sullivan Avenue and Eastmoor Avenue. Both vehicles had major front-end damage, and the passenger and driver’s side air bags of the other vehicle, a Toyota Prius, were deployed. The driver was sitting on the curb, and Officer N. Martin saw a bottle of Isopropyl alcohol on the hood of the Sienna. The officer said the driver was trying to drink from it after the collision. The driver of the Toyota Sienna and his passenger were transported to the hospital for their injuries. This case will be forwarded to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office for prosecution of the driver, a 61-year old Daly City resident.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
