San Leandro Police Make Arrests on Catalytic Converter Thefts.
On April 13, 2021, at 4:40 pm, SLPD responded to investigate a catalytic converter theft in the 1500 block of Washington Avenue. The investigating officer obtained a suspect vehicle description.
Shortly after the theft, SLPD Detectives located the suspect vehicle in Oakland, where they observed the suspects attempting to sell numerous catalytic converters. SLPD prevented the sale and arrested two individuals, a 31 and a 32-year-old male from Oakland. Detectives also recovered seven catalytic converters from the scene.
On April 14, 2021, at 3:40 am, SLPD responded to a catalytic converter theft in the 400 block of Superior Avenue. Officers located three individuals in the process of cutting a catalytic converter from a car. Two of the suspects fled in a vehicle, and officers pursued them into Oakland. One of the suspects remained at the scene and was taken into custody.
The suspect's vehicle collided with a parked car in Oakland, and officers took another suspect into custody. The suspect vehicle had a generator and power-driven cutting tool to remove the converters.
Additional catalytic converters were also recovered from the suspect vehicle.
SLPD would like to remind our community to take measures to make their vehicles less vulnerable to theft.
- Park within well-lit areas
- Park inside a garage if possible
- Park close to building entrances or near busy roadways
- Add video surveillance to the area where your vehicle is regularly parked, and add motion alerts to your smartphone
- Install aftermarket catalytic converter security devices
