#LASD Traffic Enforcement Officers Conducted a Safety Operation Directed towards Motorists Who Fail to Yield to Pedestrians, #Lawndale

On Wednesday, April 14, 2021, between 9:00 am. to 11:00 am, at Prairie Avenue and 145th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard and 149th Street, Lawndale,  South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station traffic enforcement officers conducted a safety operation directed towards motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians.

In 2019, over 6,000 pedestrians have died in the United States as a result of traffic collisions.  82% of pedestrian deaths in 2019 occurred in urban areas, up from 59% in 1975.  63% of pedestrian deaths in 2019 occurred on major roads other than interstates and freeways.  In urban areas, 52 percent of pedestrian deaths in 2019 occurred on roads with speed limits of 40 mph or less; in rural areas, 17% of deaths occurred on such roads.  The City of Lawndale has had 63 collisions involving pedestrians from 2016 to 2021.  South Los Angeles Station deputies, along with Hawthorne Police Department motor officers, conducted a Crosswalk Safety Operation in the City of Lawndale.

In an effort to reduce pedestrian-involved traffic collisions, deputies from South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station and in conjunction with the Hawthorne Police Department Traffic Unit on Prairie Avenue, conducted a traffic safety operation at two heavily-traveled intersections. Traffic enforcement officers were ready to stop and cite motorists who fail to yield to the pedestrians.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK ENFORCEMENT OPERATION - RESULTS

The purpose of this operation was to reduce the number of pedestrians struck by vehicles in crosswalks as well as to reduce the severity of crashes involving pedestrians by bringing attention, enforcement, & education to the area.  Our deputies issued 60 citations during the operation and arrested/ released 5 suspended/unlicensed drivers.  Please yield for pedestrians in the crosswalk and obey all traffic laws.
