Advisory

Morgan Hill Resident Cited for Possession of Illegal Fireworks

Within the last six months, MHPD has received, and officers have responded to approximately twenty calls for service regarding illegal fireworks and loud explosions, all originating between San Pedro Ave./ Butterfield Blvd and San Pedro Ave./ Walnut Grove Drive.

Finally, on Friday, April 9, 2021, at approximately 8:57 PM, an MHPD officer was driving in the area of Butterfield Blvd. / Barrett Ave., when he observed about ten aerial fireworks being shot in the air. The officer drove toward the area of San Luis Way/ Cory Drive; simultaneously,      the Morgan Hill Communication Center received numerous calls of fireworks being discharged in the area of San Luis Way.

When the officer arrived on San Luis Way, he contacted Victor Saud, age 51, from Morgan Hill. After following up on further investigative leads, the officer determined Victor was responsible for lighting off the illegal fireworks at Jasper Park, located at 16711 San Luis Way. Three boxes of expended illegal fireworks were located at the park and confiscated; Victor was cited for a violation of Morgan Hill Municipal Code (MHMC) 8.32.010 (Possession of Fireworks).

MHPD would like to remind everyone to report those who choose to discharge illegal fireworks. In the past, fireworks have resulted in brush fires, damaged homes, missing pets, and unnecessary injuries. Our surrounding hills are dry, and every illegal firework poses a significant threat to the safety of our community. Morgan Hill Police and Fire have adopted a “zero tolerance” policy for illegal fireworks and will be actively patrolling for violations.

Possession of fireworks in the City of Morgan Hill is a misdemeanor, and the fines can range from $100 to $1000, and a criminal conviction could also result in up to six months in County jail.

Anyone with information regarding this case or other suspects related to the discharging of illegal or dangerous fireworks is asked to please contact Sgt. Bill Norman at (669) 253-4982 or email at [email protected].
