Crime Blotter for the Week of April 18-24, 2021

The following is a synopsis of crimes reported for the week of April 18, 2021– April 24, 2021.        

April 18, 2021

  • No significant activity.
April 19, 2021

April 20, 2021
  • Grand Theft Auto:
A victim reported their vehicle stolen near the 2700 Block of Huntington Drive. The victim’s Chevy Suburban was stolen between 03-05-21, 4:30 pm, and 04-20-21, 9:32 am. Deputies did not locate any surveillance video. The vehicle is still outstanding.
  • Grand Theft Auto:
A victim reported their vehicle stolen near the 1100 Block of Central Avenue. The victim’s Hyundai Tucson was stolen between 04-06-21, 3:00 pm, and 04-20-21, 12:45 am from the location. Deputies did not locate any surveillance video. Compton Sheriff Station recovered the vehicle on 04-21-21. No one in custody.

  • Petty Theft (Shoplifting):
An informant reported a theft at 1050 Huntington Drive (Target). Loss prevention reviewed surveillance video and noticed a male adult place several “Tide Pods” inside a shopping cart and exited the store, making no attempt to pay for the items. Surveillance video captured the incident. The estimated loss was $202.41.
  • Petty Theft:
A victim reported a theft near the 1200 Block of Huntington Drive. The victim stated on 04-23-21, at approximately 8:45 am, unknown persons stole the victim’s white coffee table from the parking lot of the location. The estimated loss was $300.
 
April 24, 2021
  • Petty Theft:
A victim reported a theft near the 1800 Block of Wardell Avenue. The victim stated on 04-23-21, between 1:00 am and 6:00 am, unknown persons stole the victim’s truck tailgate from his Toyota Tacoma. The estimated loss was $100.
  • Grand Theft (Shoplifting):
An informant reported a theft at 1450 Mountain Avenue (Harbor Freight). Loss prevention reviewed past surveillance video and noticed a male adult walk into the store, steal an Omni Welder from the display shelf and walk out of the store, making no attempt to pay for the item.Surveillance video captured the incident. The estimated loss was $1,099.99.
  • Grand Theft from an Unlocked Vehicle:
A victim reported a theft near the 1900 Block of Earlington Avenue. The victim stated on 04-23-21, between 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm, unknown persons stole his wallet and two cell phones from inside his unlocked vehicle. The estimated loss was $1,760.

Cyber Crime Security (Part Two):
  • Secure your Mobile Devices- Be aware that your mobile device is vulnerable to viruses and hackers. Download applications from trusted sources. Install the latest operating system updates.
  • Protect your Data- Use encryption for your most sensitive files, such as tax returns or financial records. Make regular backups of all your important data, and store it in another location.
  • Secure your wireless network- Wi-Fi (wireless) networks are vulnerable to intrusion if they are not adequately secured. Public Wi-Fi, aka “Hot Spots”, are also vulnerable. Avoid conducting financial or corporate transactions on these networks.
  • Protect your identity- Be cautious when giving out personal information such as your name, address, phone number, or financial information on the internet, make sure the websites are secure.
  • Avoid being scammed- Always think before you click on a link or file of unknown origin. Don’t feel pressured by any emails.  Check the source of the message. Never reply to emails that ask you to verify your information or confirm your user ID or password.
