Suspect in custody after violent assault at Corte Madera bus pad
A Corte Madera man was arrested Monday after he violently attacked his former girlfriend and then tried to evade arrest by running in the traffic lanes on Highway 101.
On April 26th at 4:10 p.m. Central Marin Police officers responded to a report of man assaulting a woman at the southbound Highway 101 bus pad under the Tamalpais Drive overpass. The man was dragging the woman by her hair as she screamed for help. The suspect, later identified as Steven Zachery Rizzo, forced the victim to board a Golden Gate Transit bus and the driver intervened to assist her while he called for police assistance. As soon as the first officer arrived at the scene, Rizzo tried to escape by running south on the freeway in the number four traffic lane. He turned and ran across the southbound lanes to the center median with the officer in close foot pursuit. Rizzo stopped in the median and fought with the officer as additional units arrived. Rizzo then jumped over the center barricade and moved into the stopped commute traffic in the northbound lanes. Officers quickly took him into custody and moved him to the shoulder of the roadway.
The 19-year-old female victim received serious injuries and was taken to the hospital by Central Marin Fire Department paramedics. Two officers had minor injuries, one was treated at the scene, and the other treated and released at the hospital.
Rizzo, age 22, was booked at Marin County Jail on a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges, including kidnapping, felony domestic violence, criminal threats, obstruction, battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest, and two probation violations. Bail was set at $100,000. Rizzo remains in custody and his first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday April 28th at 9:00 a.m.
