Crime Statistics and Crime Prevention in Moraga

The Moraga Police Department regularly reviews crimes and incidents that occur in our Town.  The more serious crimes are known as “Part 1” crimes and are reported to both the state and federal Departments of Justice on a monthly basis.  We also have a number of other reporting requirements, but want to provide our residents with a look at our current Part 1 statistics for the first 1/3 of the year (Jan 1 – Apr 30):

Moraga Police officers continuously use our community camera system that provides video coverage of the main access points to our Town, as well as systems that are maintained by both Orinda Police and Lafayette Police, to gain information and evidence regarding suspects who commit crimes in Moraga.  This system works best when used in conjunction with residential and commercial video systems in a layered approach.  For example, in the recent shoplifting incident at Moraga Hardware, the store owner and employees were able to provide information and video footage, which was used in conjunction with Town cameras.  It was also used to create a crime bulletin for Bay Area law enforcement seeking more information about the crime.

Thank you to those of you who have provided video surveillance from your systems in the past and to those of you who have registered your system so we know who to contact to potentially obtain video footage.  You can register your system by using the link on our website (moraga.ca.us/178/police).

Here are a few ideas about how you can assist in preventing crime in our Town:

  1. Ensure that your residence and vehicles are locked and secured, especially when you are not home.  Many of our thefts and burglaries involve unlocked vehicles and unsecure buildings.
  2. See Something – Say Something.  Residents know their neighborhoods better than anyone.  If you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious, report it.  When you report suspicious activity, the Dispatcher will need to know what is going on that is suspicious and why it is suspicious, as well as a description of the involved parties.
  3. Take precautions to secure your property before a crime occurs.  Here are a few tips:  ensure that you have deadbolt locks on your exterior doors, outside lighting, trim shrubbery to ensure officers have a clear view of your home (no hiding places), lock your gates providing access to your backyard, consider an alarm system with advisory signs and a video surveillance system, and coordinate with your neighbors to watch each other’s homes when someone is away.
  4. Keep the telephone number for Moraga Police Dispatch (925-284-5010) on your cell phone for easy access.  Note:  you also use this number for both Orinda Police and Lafayette Police).

Please contact the Moraga Police at 925-888-7055 with any questions or concerns.  To report a crime or suspicious activity, please call Dispatch at 925-284-5010.  For Emergencies, Dial 9-1-1.

Thank you for helping us to keep Moraga a safe community.
