Do you need to obtain a copy of a police report? Find out how!
So you were unfortunately the victim of a crime or a traffic collision and now need a copy of the report for court or insurance purposes. What do you do?
We are often asked how a citizen can obtain a copy of a police report. Most police reports are available to the parties involved and can be obtained by following a few simple steps:
1. When a patrol deputy handles a report call for you, they will most likely give you a trifold with your report number on it. Hang on to that, you will need the report number!
2. WALK IN to our Sheriff's Station lobby to fill out a simple form for the official request. Because your identification and relation to the report must be verified, phone calls are NOT accepted.
3. Once the request is processed and approved, one of our friendly secretaries will contact you to advise you the report is available. Keep in mind, some information may be redacted.
4. Approved report requests are $25.00 (except for victims of domestic violence). Lancaster Station accepts cash, check or credit cards. We do not accept debit cards.
Please keep in mind that incident reports may take from 7-14 days to be processed and traffic accident reports may take up to a month depending on the length of the investigation.
Being a victim of a crime is never easy, but we hope that by following these steps, obtaining a copy of your report will be!
