Red Flag Warning Issued Through May 10, Additional Staffing On-Duty to Increase Fire Protection in Fremont
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the North and East Bay hills (which includes areas in the Fremont hills), as well as the East Bay interior starting tonight at 11 PM through 6 AM on Monday, May 10.
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are happening now or will occur in the near future. A combination of low relative humidity, warm temperatures and strong winds can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
All Fremont Fire Department fire stations are fully staffed and throughout the Red Flag Warning extra firefighters will be on-duty to increase fire protection in the City of Fremont.
We would like to encourage Fremont residents, businesses and visitors to be very alert and exercise good judgement when in or around dry vegetation.
Here are a few safety tips about how you can help prevent wildfires:
Equipment Safety:
-Never mow or trim dry grass on a Red Flag Warning Day. (Mow before 10 AM on a day when it is NOT hot and windy).
-Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.
-Avoid power equipment that creates sparks.
Vehicle Safety:
-Never pull over in dry grass.
-Ensure trailer chains don't drag on the ground.
-Maintain proper tire pressure. Driving on exposed wheel rims will throw sparks.
General Safety:
-Make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished.
-Avoid activities with open flames or sparks.
-Never burn landscape debris like leaves or branches on No Burn Days, when it's windy or in areas where it is not allowed.
May is National Wildfire Awareness Month. As the weather starts to warm up, the risk of wildfires also increases. Prepare yourself, your loved ones, your vehicle and property before the threat of a wildland fire so you’re ready in case of a fire.
