Man Suspected of Stabbing Niece

A Las Cruces man is suspected of stabbing his 21-year-old niece multiple times on Monday.

Adam Alavarez, 35, of 1050 S. Triviz Dr., is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The charge is a third-degree felony.

Shortly before noon on Monday, May 10, Las Cruces police were dispatched to the report of a stabbing at an apartment at 1050 S. Triviz Dr. Officers arrived and quickly detained Alavarez as he walked out of the apartment. Inside the apartment, officers found his 21-year-old niece suffering from multiple stab wounds to her face and neck.

The woman was initially transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso. Her injuries, though serious, are not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators learned the 21-year-old woman was lying on a sofa when Alavarez, her uncle, jumped on top of her and started hitting her. The woman did not realize she had been stabbed multiple times until Alvarez got off her and she noticed she was bleeding profusely.

Investigators learned that, prior to the incident, Alavarez might have consumed some type of narcotic that caused him to hallucinate. Alavarez initially denied his part in the attack but then acknowledged putting the knife on a bedroom dresser after stabbing his niece.

Alavarez was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
