Crime Alert Bulletin for the Week of May 3-9, 2021

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 05-04-21 at 1:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of an unknown transient male laying on the sidewalk in the area of Crocker Avenue and Hanover Street. Officer Todaro contacted the subject who initially gave him a false name. The 65-year old subject had an outstanding warrant for assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery and terrorist threats. In addition, the subject was a sex registrant and had failed to register as a sex offender. Officer Todaro arrested the subject for the outstanding warrant, failure to register as a sex offender, failure to register as a sex offender with prior felony convictions, and providing false information to a police officer.

On Thursday, 05-06-21 at 10:20 a.m., Officer Hepler was dispatched to the Safeway store on a report of a subject who was being violent and yelling at customers in the store. A Safeway employee reported that he watched the suspect open and eat food items in the aisle. The reporting party told the suspect he was not allowed to consume food without paying for it. The reporting party said the suspect then requested medical assistance. The reporting party dialed 911, and the suspect walked out of the store. The reporting party said the suspect came back inside and loaded up items including a lighter and a box of matches from a shelf. The reporting party told the suspect to stop, and he walked out of the store. The reporting party said he watched the suspect gather tanbark from a planter box outside the store, and he placed the tanbark on a picnic table. The suspect then ignited the tanbark, creating a fire. The reporting party said he used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire, and the suspect walked away on Park Plaza Drive. Officer Andrade found the suspect matching the description. The subject had an outstanding warrant for shoplifting and malicious mischief. Officer Hepler placed the suspect, a 28-year old Hayward resident, on a mental health hold. A few days later on Monday, 05-10-21, at 7:27 p.m., a representative from Safeway called again and said the same suspect was laying in front of the cart rack, making it impossible for customers to access the carts. The suspect was holding a long red lighter in his hand and was refusing to leave. Officer Hepler was the cover officer to this call and realized the subject had not been booked for his warrant after he was released from his mental health hold. The subject was transported to the San Mateo County jail.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
