Round Valley Incident on May 10, 2021 ends in peaceful resolution
On May 10, 2021, East Bay Regional Park District Police Department officers responded to Round Valley Regional Preserve to assist Brentwood Police Department in locating a subject potentially in a mental health crisis and possibly armed with a weapon. The combined efforts of multiple agencies resulted in a peaceful resolution.
The Park District's helicopter located the subject's vehicle in the park's parking lot. Officers worked quickly to remove patrons from the park, and emergency medical professionals were summoned and staged in the area. The community was notified and asked to avoid the site through social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, and Nixle.
Officers trained in Crisis Intervention Techniques were directed to the park and led de-escalation efforts. Once the Park District's helicopter located the subject, communication was attempted, with the goal of de-escalation, using Brentwood Police Department's drone and the subject's cell phone. The efforts were unsuccessful, and eventually, due to the park's terrain, the subject's location became unknown.
As darkness arrived, officers at the scene re-deployed, and agencies coordinated mobile patrols in the area to respond directly to the park as necessary. A report from an area resident alerted officers of a subject in the parking lot, calling for help. Officers immediately responded to the parking lot and began de-escalation communications. After a short period, the subject was taken to a medical facility to receive an evaluation. He received no physical injuries as a result of this incident.
We want to thank our public safety partners Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office, Pittsburg Police Department, CalFIRE law enforcement, California Highway Patrol, Brentwood Police Department, East County Fire Protection District for their assistance. Working together, the agencies brought a positive resolution and assisted a community member in need.
