DATE AND TIME: Approximately 7:20 P.M. on Monday, May 17, 2021

The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office responded to South Main Street near South Shore Drive in Crystal Township on Monday, May 17, 2021 at approximately 7:20 P.M. for a report of a motorcycle crash with injuries.
The deputies determined the driver, Charles L. Simmons age 41 from Middleton, and his passenger, a 42-year-old female passenger from Vestaburg, left a nearby residence and were traveling north on South Main Street. Witnesses indicated the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed, causing the female passenger to fall from the motorcycle. The passenger struck her head on the pavement. Neither the passenger nor driver were wearing helmets and the female sustained head and neck injuries. She was transported to Butterworth Trauma Center in Grand Rapids for her injuries and is currently listed in critical condition.
Simmons was arrested and has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury and Operation While License Suspended/Denied/Revoked Causing Serious Injury. Simmons was arraigned and remains in jail on a $175,000.00 bond.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services, and Montcalm County Central Dispatch.
