Suspected Mail Thief Arrested
On 5/10/21, at approximately 10:20 pm, Morgan Hill Police responded to 16530 Monterey Rd (Jasmine Square Apartments) on reports of a male subject breaking into the community mailboxes. The suspect fled the area in a red vehicle prior to police arrival. Officers conducted an area check of surrounding apartment complexes in an attempt to locate the suspect vehicle. An officer spotted a similar vehicle in a nearby apartment complex. The officer followed the vehicle as it quickly left the complex. The suspect vehicle tried to evade police and crashed near the intersection of Monterey Rd. and Spring Ave. The suspect driver exited the vehicle and attempted to run from the scene. Officers quickly responded to the area and took the suspect into custody without incident.
During a search of the suspect’s vehicle, large amounts of stolen mail from several different cities, burglary tools, and a replica firearm were located inside. Officers learned the suspect was a convicted felon and had an active bench warrant for a similar crime. 30-year-old Tony Nguyen of San Jose was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on possession of stolen property, burglary tools, identity theft, illegal drugs, and drug paraphernalia. MHPD is currently working with the local US Postal Inspector to locate additional victims. We are currently in the process of returning all of the recovered mail to the US Postal Inspector. If you believe you have not received mail, please contact your local Post Office.
MHPD would like to thank the residents of Jasmine Square Apartments for reporting the crime and being good witnesses. Their involvement and willingness to partner with law enforcement led to the capture of a prolific mail thief.
