SUSPECT(S):      William Shatto, age 51, transient

VICTIM(S):         San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy

SUMMARY:       On Saturday, May 22, 2021, at about 9:21 A.M., Fontana deputies responded to a report of an intoxicated subject disturbing the peace at a park during youth soccer games. The suspect, later identified as William Shatto, age 51, a transient, refused to leave and threatened people at the park. Deputies found Shatto laying on the ground near one of the soccer games. They noticed he was intoxicated and asked him to leave. Shatto refused, became irate, threatened to kill the deputy, and became aggressive, resulting in a use of force. Following the incident, deputies learned Shatto was on Post Release Community Supervision as a result of California Assembly Bill 109, for an unlisted offense. As part of then Governor Jerry Brown’s Realignment Plan, or Assembly Bill 109, to comply with a U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring the state to lower its prison population by 30,000; offenders with non-violent, non-sexual, and non-serious convictions serve reduced sentences in county jails and are placed on local supervision through county Probation. Shatto was transported to a local hospital for treatment of pre-existing injuries. After receiving medical clearance, Shatto was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for PC 69- Use of Violence and Threat of Violence Towards an Executive Officer.
