Harris County Sheriff’s Office Resumes In-Person Jail Visitations

May 24, 2021 – Harris County Jail facilities are resuming in-person visitations in a limited capacity, starting May 25. The Joint Processing Center will also reopen video visitation booths.

Like other jails across Texas, Harris County halted in-person visitation throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

To ensure the public's safety, including the well-being of those working and residing inside the Harris County Jail, the visitation plan follows the guidance and approval of local public health authorities and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

“I am proud of the work our jail medical team and our entire jail staff has done to protect people entrusted to our care from the virus,” said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “We understand the importance of communication with loved ones, and value visitation as a critical part of providing support and promoting positive change.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Sheriff’s Office employees have worked diligently to maintain a high level of public service and care, expanding phone access via a free calling program and implementing video visits for those housed at the Joint Processing Center. At this time, these efforts to maintain community ties will continue.

Prior to their visit, visitors must register online at https://visitinmate.jms.hctx.net/app. After registering, a visit may be scheduled according to the corresponding facility, day, and floor up to seven days in advance. The new scheduling platform allows residents to plan a visit up to seven days in advance. On-site registration will be available for those who arrive at a facility without an appointment, however visitation is not guaranteed due to facility limitations and safety protocols.

Visitation hours are Tuesday – Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The last scheduled visit begins at 9:30 p.m. Visits will be 20 minutes in duration, allowing time between visits for proper sanitation. Every visitor will be required to pass an electronic temperature screening and wear a mask inside Harris County jail facilities.
