Fireworks of Any Kind Are Illegal in Sunnyvale

Reports of fireworks are already ramping up and tying up our 911 emergency lines. The month leading up to 4th of July, 911 call centers become overloaded with non-emergency calls. PLEASE DO NOT CALL 911 unless you have a life-threatening emergency and need immediate help from police, fire, or medics.

Unnecessary 911 calls block people with real emergencies from reaching 911 and getting help. Any fireworks-related fires or injuries should be reported directly to 911. Other fireworks violations may be reported by calling the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety non-emergency number at (408) 730-7180. Please do not call just because you hear the sound of fireworks, call only if you actually see it happening. To dispatch officers we would need an actual location of the violation.

Fireworks can also be terrifying for military veterans struggling with PTSD and pets. The loud noises can sometimes be a trigger for veterans. Please remember that fireworks are not only illegal in Sunnyvale, but they are also a nuisance to your neighbors. If you’re caught setting off fireworks, it comes with a very hefty fine.

These extremely dry conditions mixed with illegally setting off fireworks can have devastating consequences. A simple sparkler, which is also illegal in Sunnyvale, can set dry grass on fire and create an uncontrollable blaze in seconds. It’s just not worth it.

Be safe, be smart, be a considerate neighbor.
