Black Bear sighting on Middleton Beach Road
Middleton Police and Fire Department personnel, along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are searching the area of Middleton Beach Road along Lake Mendota following reports of a black bear sighting this morning.
Initial reports indicate that a juvenile black bear, estimated at 150 to 200 pounds, was seen in the area and officers found bear footprints leading into the wooded area between Middleton Beach Road and Allen Boulevard. There were also reports that the bear was possibly seen entering Lake Mendota and swimming away from shore.
DNR officials recommend leaving the bear alone and they believe it will most likely move on from the area as night falls.
Please take appropriate precautions!
According to the DNR, bears are normally shy around humans and avoid them as much as possible. It is important to reinforce
this fear by scaring bears away so that conflicts are reduced.
If you see a bear in your yard or around your home...
• Place yourself in a secure area so the bear has a clear escape path. Make a lot of noise by yelling, honking a car horn, or banging pots and pans.
• Install motion-activated water sprinklers, lights or alarms.
If you come in contact with a bear...
