One Arrested for Grand Theft
On May 23, 2021, a victim reported their bike was stolen from their vehicle while shopping at the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center. Louis Thorsson, a 37-year-old Novato resident, was identified as the suspect, based on review of surveillance footage at the shopping center, but had not been located at that time.
On June 1, 2021, at around 5:12pm, NPD Detectives and Officers assigned to the Novato Response Team located Thorsson, walking west on Novato Blvd near the Square Shopping Center. Detectives were already aware that Thorsson had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failing to appear for a traffic violation.
Upon seeing Thorsson, Detectives contacted and arrested him for his involvement in the bike theft and for the outstanding arrest warrant. A search of Thorsson’s person upon his arrest produced over an ounce of suspected methamphetamine. Thorsson was booked into Marin County Jail for possession of a controlled substance for sale, grand theft, and for the outstanding arrest warrant.
Unfortunately, Thorsson was not in possession of the stolen bicycle and the current location of the bike remains under investigation. The bike was described by the owner to be a teal and orange Genius Model Scott Mountain Bike, shown in the photo below in the suspects possession. The second photo is a similar model of the bike detail.
Due to increased bicycle thefts in Marin, this is a reminder to keep your bikes and property safe.
Don’t give thieves the easy ride:
- Lock your bicycles every time you leave it unattended.
- Use a U-lock when possible. Lock the frame and one wheel.
- Lock your bike in a well-lit or busy area.
- Register your bike with the National Bike Registry (NBR) now called Project 529, an international registration system that helps return lost and stolen bicycles to their rightful owners. You can register, report, and recover bicycles at https://project529.com/garage
- Marked property may also deter theft due to resale difficulties.
- Don’t leave your bike in one place for too long.
- Take a photo of your bike and the serial number in case of theft.
