Crime Bulletin for the week of May 24-30, 2021
When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.
Notable Cases
On Monday, 05-24-21 at 3:31 a.m., Officer Premenko ran a license plate of a Winnebago RV parked on Schwerin Street near Ottilia Street. The officer discovered the RV was stolen from Crockett on 05-02-21, and he requested a tow truck. Officer Ortiz arrived to assist, and they found three locked doors. Officer Premenko was able to open one window and saw a subject sleeping inside the sleeping quarters. The subject woke up and complied with the officers’ requests for him to exit the RV. The ignition was punched, and the ignition lock was on the center console. Officers arrested the 59-year old transient subject for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.
On Tuesday, 05-25-21 at approximately 11:33 p.m., a 27-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol following a collision with a parked vehicle on the 1000 block of Hanover Street.
On Thursday, 05-27-21 at 1:15 a.m., Officer Abuan was dispatched to a report of a vehicle stopped in the middle of northbound Highway 35. The reporting party said the driver stumbled out of the car. Officer Abuan arrived to see a subject standing outside of a Tesla that was disabled and stuck on the center median of Highway 35 between John Daly Boulevard and Olympic Way. Officer Abuan conducted field sobriety tests on the subject, a 27-year old San Francisco resident. The subject failed the tests, and Officer Abuan arrested him for driving under the influence.
On Saturday, 05-29-21 at 10:09 p.m., Officer B. McCarthy and Officer Reyes were on patrol on Bayshore Boulevard and conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle with 2017 registration tabs affixed to the license plate. The driver admitted to the officers that he did not have a driver's license with him, as his license was suspended. The dispatcher advised that the subject, a 28-year old Oakland resident, had two outstanding warrants. Officer McCarthy asked the subject to step out of his vehicle, and the officer asked the subject to place his hands behind his back so he could pat search him for any weapons. The officer said the subject froze up and did not initially place his hands behind his back. The officer then asked the subject if he had anything illegal on his person, and the officer said the subject admitted to having a gun in his pocket. The officer then removed a 9 mm semi-automatic firearm from the subject’s right pocket. The officer also removed one live round of 9mm ammunition and a plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine from the subject’s left pocket. The subject did not want to talk about the weapon, and the officers placed him under arrest for being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, possessing ammunition by a prohibited person, concealing a firearm on person, possession of a controlled substance while armed, possession unlawful paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, and for the two outstanding warrants.

Scams/Other
“Geek Squad” Scam
On Wednesday, 05-26-21, Officer N. Martin met with a 70-year old Daly City resident regarding a report of a gift card fraud. The reporting party/victim told the officer that she had “Geek Squad” protection through Best Buy Electronics for the past few years. The victim said she received an e-mail regarding her Geek Squad membership that was about to expire, and the new cost was $249.99, instead of the usual $99.99 she had been paying. The victim called the telephone number on the e-mail and spoke with “Mike Smith” who said he could help her if she could provide him access to her computer remotely. The victim agreed and “Mike” had full control over her computer. The victim said she watched “Mike” open various websites on her computer and assisted her in paying $249.99 to renew her membership. “Mike” asked her to open her Bank of America on-line account. The victim said she did that, and “Mike” opened another box not within the Bank of America website. “Mike” asked her to type in $249.99 and hit “submit”. After she did this, she was told that she placed the decimal point in the wrong location. “Mike” told her he had made an error, and $24,999 was given to her. “Mike” showed the victim an image on her screen of the transaction, and he told her he could get in trouble for this and asked her to pay Geek Squad back or he could get in trouble. The victim felt bad and agreed to pay them back. “Mike” then asked the victim to pay back the money via various gift cards and bank transactions. “Mike” instructed the victim to go to the Apple store and purchase $8,000 worth of gift cards, and if the Apple employees asked what the reason was for, to tell them to say it was for a wedding. “Mike” then asked the victim to text her the codes on the cards she purchased using the “Whatsapp” application. “Mike” told the victim if she did not pay, she would not gain access to her computer. Long story short: the victim lost $12,000 before realizing this was a scam, and officers were able to give the victim access back to her computer.

Nextdoor.com
Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
