Advisory
Driveway sealcoating cam targeting elderly resident
We want to advise the public of a scam attempt that just occurred this afternoon around 2:30pm. Three males driving an unknown silver truck approached a 71 year old woman working outside in her garden on the Village's west side and offered to sealcoat her driveway. They applied a liquid that may have been sealcoat material that had been thinned and also went into her basement to "seal foundation cracks." They demanded $11,000 for the job and then offered a bargain of $9,000, which are over 100 times the typical cost of this kind of job, depending on the size of the driveway. When the woman called her bank about the funds, the males left before they could receive any money.
The males were driving a silver truck of some kind and were described as white or Hispanic.
As always, be sure to check references of contractors you are considering hiring for a home maintenance job. If you don't know the typical going rate for such a job, research it before moving forward. You can always call police if you are unsure if an offer is a scam or not and officers will be happy to help.
