Veteran's Park Weed Removal - volunteers welcome! Saturday, June 12, 10:00 AM - see link/email body for details
ALL VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!
A group of "weed warriors" will be working to remove invasive species from Veteran's Park this coming Saturday, June 12 @ 10 AM.
Veteran’s Park is a true gem of Sherman. A beautiful setting in the center of town, on the water with tennis and basketball courts, gazebo, ball fields, playground, and a lovely half-mile track. Unfortunately, the latter is surrounded by invasive plant species. As you go around the track you will pass by colonies of Japanese knotweed, winged euonymus, multiflora rose, phragmites, oriental bittersweet, garlic mustard and Japanese barberry. A virtual smorgasbord of invasive plant species. Our plan is to take on these invaders for the next several years!
A group of Weed Warriors has successfully taken on other projects in town and is reaching out for volunteers to take on Vet's field! They have secured a grant from First Light which they have used to purchase some new battle equipment including another weed wrench, weed torch, and a multi-blade weed wacker. We also hired an environmental scientist to come up with a plan of attack and help us apply for permits from Inland /Wetlands and First Light. Now, with everything in order, we are ready to begin the fight!
The first cut will be on Saturday, June 12 at 10 AM on Veteran’s Field. We will begin with knotweed cutting and possibly the removal of some smaller woody plants. We are planning to come back in mid to late July and again in late August or early September. Of course, as we remove invaders we will plant native plants in their place including a pollinator pathway garden.
It is a big job and we can use your help. If you can make it please come down and have some fun for 2 to 3 hours pushing back these invaders and taking back our park. Please don't forget to bring gloves and tools like loppers and machetes.
