Alamogordo Man Suspected of Firing Rounds from Vehicle

An Alamogordo man suspected of firing multiple rounds from his vehicle as he drove along north Telshor Boulevard has been arrested and charged with a felony.

Baldemar Maynez Jr., 20, of the 600 block of south Florida Avenue in Alamogordo, N.M., is charged with one count of shooting at or from a motor vehicle. The charge is a fourth-degree felony.

About 6 p.m. on Friday, May 21, a Las Cruces motorist called 911 after her vehicle was nearly struck by a silver Nissan Armada on Telshor Boulevard. The woman then observed as the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, extended his right arm toward the passenger window of his vehicle and started firing rounds from a semiautomatic handgun.

The woman told police she witnessed the driver of the Armada fire rounds near the T-Mobile store, near Foxworth-Galbraith and near Vista College. Luckily, no injuries were reported and police were unable to locate any damage.

Las Cruces police officers caught up to the Armada and conducted a high-risk stop on the Armada near the 2700 block of Northrise Drive. The driver was identified as Maynez. Police recovered a 9mm semiautomatic handgun from his vehicle.

Investigators interviewed Maynez who indicated he drove from Alamogordo to visit his girlfriend, but they got into an argument. He acknowledged to police that he discharged several rounds from his vehicle as he drove north along Telshor Boulevard. Investigators found several spent shell casings in the Nissan Armada.

Las Cruces police detectives obtained a warrant for Maynez’s arrest. He was arrested Sunday, June 13, by police in Alamogordo, N.M. He is initially being held without bond in the Otero County Detention Center.
