On Friday, 06-11-21 at 5:35 p.m., Officer N. Martin and Officer Serbin were dispatched to the front parking lot of the police station on a report of an assault that had just occurred at the nearby Krispy Kreme parking lot. The victim, a 39-year old San Francisco resident, said he arranged to meet with someone he communicated with on “Offer Up” to buy a vehicle exhaust wrap. They agreed to meet at the parking lot of Krispy Kreme, and when they met, the victim said there was a disagreement on the price. The victim said the seller/suspect became very rude, and the victim did not want to purchase the item. The victim said the suspect’s demeanor became aggressive, and when the victim turned to walk away, he said the suspect punched him in the right side of his face with a closed fist. The victim fell to the ground, and the suspect kicked him approximately three to four times in the head and face. The victim said he was able to sit up, and then the suspect punched him six to seven more times. The victim said the suspect left in a white SUV. The victim sustained swelling, bleeding, and cuts to his face and head. This investigation is continuing.

On Saturday, 06-12-21 at 2:12 a.m., Officer Greene conducted a traffic enforcement stop in the area of Geneva Avenue and Bayshore Boulevard. The driver was intoxicated, and Officer Green arrested him for driving under the influence and for having a suspended driver's license. On Saturday, 06-12-21 at approximately 5:23 a.m., several officers were dispatched to a report of subjects asleep inside a green Toyota Tacoma with the engine running at the stop sign at Brunswick Street and Evergreen Avenue. The dispatchers told the officers the vehicle was stolen from San Francisco. The officers parked their patrol vehicles in a manner to prevent the suspect from driving off; however, the suspect did just that after he was awakened by the officers. The driver, a 34-year old Daly City resident, was subsequently arrested for vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, and probation violation. His passenger, a 32-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of burglary tools, multiple misdemeanor warrants, and a felony warrant.

On Saturday, 06-12-21 at 12:09 p.m., several officers were dispatched to Serramonte Shopping Center on a report of a Victoria’s Secret Loss Prevention Officer who was following two female shoplifting suspects who tried to him with their vehicle as they fled. The 39-year old Loss Prevention Officer (victim) said an employee called him to say two females were shoplifting. The victim left his office and stood near the cash registers as he watched the two females hurriedly throwing handfuls of store merchandise into paper shopping bags. The victim asked the suspects to put down their bags, and the suspects ignored his request. One of the suspects told the victim that she was going to “mace” him and they left the store with the merchandise. The victim followed the suspects out of the store, and one of the suspects sprayed him in the face and chest with pepper spray. The victim continued to follow the suspects, and he said one of the bags tore completely open, and the merchandise fell onto the street. The victim began picking up the merchandise while the females got into a vehicle. The victim pulled out his cellphone to capture a video of the vehicle, and the victim said the vehicle then sped towards him, swerving to hit him as he jumped out of the way. Almost $2,000 worth of merchandise was stolen, and $900 worth was recovered. This investigation is continuing.

Scams/Other

Amazon Text Scam

On Tuesday, 06-08-21, a 75-year old Daly City resident reported being the victim of a scam. The victim told the officer that earlier in the day, he received a text from a subject posing as an Amazon employee. The text was sent from a 909 area code, and it read: "You spent 3463.54$ for Haier Dishwasher at AMZN Order id RT60821BQPOE on 06-08-2021.  Call NOw 1-844-389-9793, If NOT YOU."  The victim called the number and said it was a mistake as he had never purchased a dishwasher. The victim said the subject gave him a convoluted story about the mistake with the transaction to his Amazon account—that his “IP address was compromised”, and someone must have accessed his account remotely. The victim said the subject told him if he went to Target and purchased gift cards in the amount of $4,000, his Amazon account could be fixed. The victim said the suspect told him if the Target employees questioned him about the purchase, to tell them it was for a family member’s wedding or graduation. The victim said the Target employees, indeed, questioned him and informed him about scams, but the victim rebuffed their advice and told them the cards were for a wedding, as instructed by the suspect. The victim purchased $4,000 worth of cards and provided the suspect with the numbers on the back of the cards. After he provided the numbers, the victim said the suspect instructed him to purchase more cards. The victim said at that point, he knew he was being scammed and stopped. The victim told the officer he always warned his friends and loved ones of similar scams, and that he personally felt stupid for falling for such a scam.

Some of you may be perplexed as to how someone can fall for a scam like this. All I can say is that these scammers are GOOD at what they do, and they know just what to say to make people believe them.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
