INCIDENT: Traffic Collision Involving Marked Sheriff’s Unit
LOCATION: Seventh Avenue / Walnut Street, Hesperia
SUSPECT: Christopher Martinez, 36-year-old male, resident of Hesperia
SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at approximately 10:03 p.m., deputies from the City of Hesperia, along with rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Walnut Street in reference to a traffic collision involving a marked Sheriff’s unit and a Toyota 4Runner.
Investigators determined the Toyota was travelling westbound on Walnut Street and the Sheriff’s unit was travelling northbound on Seventh Avenue. The driver of the Toyota, Christopher Martinez, failed to stop at the intersection’s posted stop sign, entering the two way stop intersection directly in front of the Sheriff’s unit. The deputy was unable to avoid the collision and subsequently collided into the Toyota. After colliding with the Sheriff’s unit, the Toyota continued westbound on Walnut Street and came to rest when it collided into a fence located on a private property.
Field sobriety tests at the scene indicated Martinez was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. Martinez was arrested and booked at High Desert Detention Center for VC23152(a) Driving Under the Influence and VC23152(b) Driving with excessive Blood Alcohol Content. No injuries were reported, despite major damage to both vehicles.
The collision remains under investigation and any witnesses are asked to contact Deputy G. Geerlings from the Hesperia Station.
